Your government, healthcare,
office, or other occupational facility likely has multiple types of
flooring.
Offices may have carpet, while waiting areas could have wood or tile floors. Each type of flooring
warrants
a different cleaning routine to preserve the life of the floor and maintain the health of people in the
building. Developing a cleaning routine for your floors starts with making a list of the types of
flooring
you have (vinyl, tile, wood, etc.) and then selecting products and employing strategies to achieve
optimum
results.
Carpet cleaning strategy
Your carpeting must be vacuumed on a routine basis to remove hair, dust particles, and dirt
that
gets trapped in the fibers. In some settings, this may only need to be done once or twice a
week. In high-traffic areas, or environments where the risk of disease or infection is high,
vacuuming may need done daily. Carpeting also needs to be regularly washed.
The best way to clean tile
All tile is different, and it is important to know what your tile floor is made of. Many
commercial grade tile floors have vinyl elements and need non-abrasive cleaners. Standard
tile
can withstand harsher chemicals but be conscientious of grout which may not hold up to
strong
chemicals. Cleaning brushes help get grout completely clean in areas a mop cannot reach.
Hard wood flooring care
When cleaning wood floors, be careful with excessive use of water or liquid cleaner. Due to
wood’s porous nature, it will absorb liquid and dry with permanent damage if oversaturated.
Sweeping and vacuuming regularly is a great way to keep wood floors visibly clean. Mop
routinely
with wood-safe cleaner and spot clean and polish with a mild detergent as needed.
Laminate and Vinyl care and cleaning
Similar to hardwood floors, it is important to limit water use on vinyl and laminate
flooring.
Too much water can get into the seams of vinyl flooring and cause the adhesive to loosen and
peel back. Laminate has been known to expand if it absorbs too much water. Therefore, it is
suggested that any spills be cleaned from these types of floors straightaway. Consistent
sweeping and mopping is the best way to keep this flooring clean.
Clean concrete effectively
If your building has a concrete floor, investing in sealing it will help keep it from
absorbing
spilled liquids, debris and dirt, and prevent staining. Concrete floors can handle nearly
any
cleaning, and often need a stiff scrubbing brush to remove spills and messes.
